The White-winged Tern, also known as the White-winged Black Tern (Chlidonias leucopterus), is a small bird, 9" (23cm), which is a common Paleartic migrant, seen in Kenya from Aug-May, mainly on freshwater and alkaline lakes. Many first-year birds over-summer in Kenya.
Often seen in large flocks, which hawk insects or hover over water, catching insects. They are also attracted to grass fires, or ploughing opoerations. It is the most common of the Marsh Terns.
