The Variable Sunbird (Cinnyris venustus) is a tiny, 4.5" (11cm) bird, seen all over Kenya, except for SW of Nairobi.
The male, when seen with breeding plumage, features iridescent blue-green head and neck, with a violet crown, throat & upper breast. Black wings and tail, with yellow or yellow-orange underparts. A sub-species, in some parts of Kenya show white underparts.
When not in breeding plumage, the male looks similar to the female, which is a grey-olive above and buffy-yellow below.
Often seen in pairs, feeding in flowering bushes and trees in bushy savannas, forest edges or cultivated gardens.
Their song is a series of rapid and rising "chit-chit-chit-chit" notes.
