The Sooty Chat is a small, 7" (18cm) bird, found in the open grassland areas of the Masai Mara area of Kenya.
The male is a glossy black colour, with white 'shoulders', which are not always visible when it is perched. By contrast, the female is 'sooty brown' in colour and has no white areas. The female is not dissimilar to the Northern Anteater Chat, but their is no overlap with that species area-wise.
Sooty Chats are most often seen in pairs, or small groups, perched on top of Termite mounds, where they nest in the burrows of small animals.
